By my (crude) measurements with a stopwatch, Safari outperforms Firefox 2.0 by about 10-12% on average. (time taken from Go to Fully loaded). Consistently.

Safari may appear 'slower' to some people that expect to see images and content appear before completely loaded. It shows parts of the page only when their style (or in the case of images, data) has fully loaded. This has been discussed several times in development fora (and also some years back in Surfin' Safari, David Hyatt's blog). While this may give the impression that Safari takes longer (as the user sees a white canvas instead of content slowly appearing) it is a sound design decision.

While I am not sure if it's your perception that's the cause of your belief, or whether there is some other reason, perhaps related to the configuration or network connection, I definitely do not share your experience with regard to Safari's performance on any of my machines.

Meh. I wouldn't be that enthusiastic about Safari. Well, I guess I aren't. It's very nice. It is by far the prettiest browser in any platform ever. But it has several problems. Chief amongst them is speed. I don't know how you figure it's faster than Firefox. Perhaps there's something funny about my internet connection, but even though I use it (the Fox is butt ugly on the Mac), I would definetely not call it faster.

Anyways.
