There are some films that few people know of. That fewer people have seen. But sometimes they are films that possess qualities surpassing many of the well-known, widely distributed commercial ones.

Take for example Thirteen Conversations About One Thing, a truly fantastic movie about happiness, predictability and order, presented through a series of intertwined events in the lives of four people. This is probably probably the only movie where I found Matthew McConaughey to be quite good. John Turturro, a favourite of mine, and Alan Arkin, another amazing actor, are both excellent their respective roles (Alan Arkin really steals the show). I first saw ‘13 conversations’ about a year ago on the, at the time newly introduced, Hellenic Public Digital TV channel Cine+. I have to admit that, despite being a cinephile I had not heard of it until then. And what a pleasant surprise it was. Among the numerous cheap b-movies, the occasional hollywood blockbuster and the mid 20th century arty films the channel broadcasts (due to lack of funds I presume), jewels such as ‘13 conversations’ occasionally crop up. The movie focuses on the exceptional, the rare type of interaction, between strangers, family members, couples. It presents occasions of extreme sadness and happiness both through everyday events and through exceptional circumstances. The urban setting does not matter in this movie’s appeal; on the contrary: the acting and the richness of the characters, their exceptional stories, so different to their unexceptional lives, blend in, as they would in any environment.

‘13 Conversations’ is one of those pleasant surprises, a jewel hidden among the scores of rubbish coming out of Hollywood. But it’s those little known movies that we get to find once in a while that prove that there’s still hope for U.S. cinema.

Before Java was conceived (let alone used), before C++ became the de facto application development language — certainly before it got STL and compilers worthy of mention — NeXT Inc. licensed Objective-C, a Smalltalk resembling, object oriented true C-superset, as the main language for its NeXTSTEP operating system. Objective-C and the (typically) accompanying APIs built upon it by NeXT and whose successors now reside in OS X as ‘Cocoa’, were many years ahead of their time. When I first coded in Objective-C, in 2002, more than 15 years since the introduction of the language, I was amazed at its simple and elegant structure and immensely powerful features; coupled with the Apple APIs, it represented by far the best development platform I’d used: powerful, yet simple, elegant and fast with a good balance between dynamic, runtime-dependent and performance optimised, low-level features. Objective-C was quite popular in some corporate environments in the early 1990s, due to the ease of use of developing GUI applications under the NeXT- (and later Open-)STEP frameworks. It was also, as is famously and often quoted in press, used by Tim Berners-Lee to write the first Web browser.

Εδώ και αρκετούς μήνες έχω αποκτήσει έναν λογαριασμό VoIP τηλεφωνίας από την Ηellas On Line, και συγκεκριμένα από την υπηρεσία της eVoice. Η ιδέα είναι πρωτοποριακή για τα ελληνικά δεδομένα: η HOL σου παρέχει αριθμό τηλεφώνου στην Ελλάδα εντελώς δωρεάν, χωρίς πάγιο ή άλλο κόστος εγγραφής, και από εκεί και πέρα πληρώνεις τα τηλεφωνήματα αν και όταν τον χρησιμοποιείς για εξερχόμενες κλήσεις.

Αντίστοιχες υπηρεσίες SIP τηλεφωνίας στην χώρα μας υπάρχουν, όμως καμία δεν παρέχει — απ’όσο γνωρίζω — δωρεάν τον αριθμό. Οι τιμές της HOL για εξερχόμενες κλήσεις είναι αρκετά καλές, αν και όχι κάτι το εντυπωσιακό, δεδομένων των πάρα πολλών καλών εναλλακτικών επιλογών. Αν αναλογισθεί κανείς πως με την εγγραφή σου ‘χαρίζουν’ και 3 ευρώ δωρεάν κλήσεις, θα έλεγε κανείς πως η HOL έχει αποφασίσει να προσφέρει πραγματικά καλές υπηρεσίες στον τομέα αυτό.

Δυστυχώς κάπου εκεί σταματούν οι ευχάριστες εκπλήξεις και αρχίζει η απογοήτευση που χαρακτηρίζει τις περισσότερες υπηρεσίες/προϊόντα στον τόπο μας: η υπηρεσία χρησιμοποιεί μοντέλο προ-πληρωμής όπως και πολλές άλλες υπηρεσίες του είδους (π.χ. Skype, Gizmo κ.ο.κ.). Σε αντίθεση με όλες τις υπηρεσίες που σέβονται τον εαυτό τους, η HOL δε θέλει τα χρήματα σας με τον φυσιολογικό τρόπο (δηλ. πιστωτική κάρτα μέσω διαδικτύου) αλλά παρέχει τις εξής επιλογές: είτε θα καταθέσετε τα χρήματα σε κάποιον τραπεζικό λογαριασμό της Eurobank, ή, drum roll, θα στείλετε ΦΑΞ μια φωτοτυπία ταυτότητας και πιστωτικής κάρτας. Χμμ ναι. Αυτό είναι συνήθιο αρκετών εταιριών στη χώρα μας. Και προφανώς θεωρούν αυτές οι εταιρίες πως είναι ο μοναδικός τρόπος να επιβεβαιώσουν την ταυτότητα ενός υποψήφιου πελάτη τους και να μειώσουν το κόστος από κλεμμένες κάρτες/οικονομική απάτη. Προσωπικά το βρίσκω εντελώς απαράδεκτο. Ιδιαίτερα στη περίπτωση της HOL το βρίσκω κάπως παράδοξο. Επιπλέον δεν αναγράφεται πουθενά στις σελίδες του eVoice πως πρέπει να κάνεις ακροβατικά για να αγοράσεις χρόνο. Μόνον ένας σύνδεσμος με τίτλο ‘Αγορά Χρόνου’ υπάρχει στα αριστερά της σελίδας ο οποίος σε πετάει στο πορτοφόλι ‘eMoney’ όπου φυσικά δε μπορείς να προσθέσεις χρήματα. Φανταστικό.
