The last episode of the Ricky Gervais Podcast, starring Ricky Gervais (duh), Steve Merchant and Karl Pilkington was released today on iTunes (and I guess Guardian Unlimited).
I found out quite late about the Ricky Gervais Podcast, despite it being one of the most popular podcasts in the world. Actually, let me rephrase it: probably because it is one of the most popular podcasts in the world, as I suffer from the all-things-popular-suck syndrome. I first heard of it back in autumn, when the first of the last three ‘specials’ was released and slowly got hooked. I’d listen to it while doing mundane work in front of the computer, typically on weekends.
About three weeks ago I made a trip to London and having no music with me, I bought all twentysomething episodes of the Podcast from iTunes.
There are some hilarious moments in there, almost always having to do with Karl Pilkington’s moronic yet at the same time original and insanely funny opinions on a range of topics brought up during the discussion.
The novelty wears out once you’ve heard enough of them and Gervais’ obvious attempts at promoting his other works becomes slightly annoying after a while. It’s not just the pattern involving pilkington’s opinion and gervais follow-on laughs, questioning and insults that become trite, it’s mostly that the jokes, the topics and opinions get used over and over again. But it’s definitely worth listening to them. Pilkington is extremely funny and Gervais’ and Merchant’s teacher-like tone and rational explanations as well as the — evidently — good time they’re having with him are most certainly going to make you (at least) smile.
Today’s podcast was the last of the three ‘specials’ released since late October and probably the last one for some time. While ‘the Podfather’ kept me company and made me laugh quite a bit, I’m happy it ends here and now. Any more of the same stuff over and over again would probably do more harm than good to its creators.
If you haven’t listened to it yet, try the iTunes Podcast directory or find it over at Guardian Unlimited.
