Year 2006

A puzzle

Ι played this flash puzzle about a year ago and a friend just reminded me of its existence. If you haven't seen it, you should; it's quite fun. [Check this out too. By the same guy]

Προς τα πίσω.

ADSL.

Canon EOS 400D/Digital Kiss X/Digital Rebel XTi

After the release of Nikon D80, Canon's response was to be expected. It's out and it's probably going to make as big a noise as the 300D did three years ago. Canon finally added a dust-reduction system, upped the resolution to 10.1Mp and removed the top LCD. For newcomers to the SLR world, now is the time to get a camera. For those already owning Canon D-SLRs and in need of a second body, it's quite attractive too, although they will miss out on some of the more creative/technical perks that the higher end offers (say, spot metering). Most impressive: The dust-reduction system. Unfortunately the EOS 30D and 5D cameras came out just a few months ago so it'll be a while longer until the Canon mid-range gets dust reduction. The long-awaited replacement to the EOS 1-series, expected late 2006 or early 2007, will most certainly have it though.

Beyond the Shuttle

In the late 1970s the space shuttle programme at NASA was completed. NASA, an organisation that had seen much of its funding disappear in the post-lunar landing world, badly needed the shuttle, if not for the technical advantages it would bring (and they were supposed to be many), for the economic ones. The idea of […]

'The Damage in Lebanon, and Beyond'

"I never supported Hezbollah before," a young student at the American University of Beirut told me shortly after I arrived in the capital city. "But now they are defending us against Israel." His view of Hezbollah is quickly becoming the norm for hundreds of thousands of previously unsympathetic Lebanese as American-made Israeli bombs and missiles continue to rain down on the country.

Luxology modo 202

Luxology might be a newcomer to the 3D Modelling scene, but while the company was founded in 2004, most of its executives and a large number of engineers have a long history in the 3D industry, being the team the originally co-founded and wrote NewTek and its product Lightwave 3D. Their first 3D modelling product […]

Fair Use and EULAs

Interesting article on Ars about a recent decision of a U.S. Court on the subject.

WWDC'06: OSX Dtraced

XCode 3.0 seems nice! Graphical front-end to Dtrace included; Sun's dtrace is lauded as one of the most impressive dev/admin tools to appear in the last few years and Apple's adoption and integration into XCode is definitely well received. In related news, Apple published the intel kernel sources and introduced MacOSForge.org, a site for Mac OS X open source projects. Well done Apple!

Apple juice.

Apple CEO’s WWDC keynote was probably one of the least impressive for years, but there are one or two things that are of some importance: It’s payback time Judging from the attractive pricing of the Mac Pro (leaving aside the mediocre standard configuration Apple has presented the world with; Geforce 7300GT is surely not worthy […]
