Boxee Invites.

One of the most promising open-source projects regarding the home-theatre/TV (at last!) that combines excellent æsthetics, killer media features and social networking is Boxee. Boxee is based on the XBMC project. Note that while this is alpha quality software, it’s impressively stable, yet unsupported. Boxee is currently available for the AppleTV/Mac OS X, Ubuntu Linux 32bit – 7.10 and 8.04 only at the moment – and in source code form.

I’ve got some invites for the invite-only alpha testing phase, so if you’re interested drop me a comment below and I’ll send you one.

Update: No more invites here, comments are now closed. I’m sure you can find some elsewhere pretty easily.

    Hello,

It’s a really nice project. Seems like Apple’s (and I guess windows) media centre (the bluetooth thingie that you log in with Apple’s hardware) and Plex for MacOSX. Plex is really awesome if you have a Mac, much better than the build in media centre.

What would really great, it’s a Dreambox plugin. Dreambox runs on linux and the only way to stream from your computer to your dreambox decoder is via VLC via ugly advanced configurations. A media centre like that, running a Linux/Mac who streams to the dreambox via LAN would give a huge boost and imho attract dreambox users.

I don’t know you are familiar with dreambox but I was astonished when I saw the extension of the Dreambox community. I mean, it’s a HUGE community.

Please send me a Boxee invite. My wife got a kitchen TV as a gift, and we don’t want to have a large cable box there, so Apple TV or Mac mini are the options. I am not going to rent any movies from iTunes ’cause I am happy with Netflix, so if it’s Apple TV I really need something like Boxee to make it worthwhile. Do you hear that, Apple? :)
Any thoughts on Apple TV vs Mac mini as a media center?
