I've followed Jonathan Schwartz's blog for a while and more than often he has interesting things to write. Sun has long been one of the major forces in the computing industry and it's gradual decline in mindshare and presence after 2000 was saddening, even though it was justified. After years of confusion within the company about its strategy and the role of Open Source, it seems that it's starting to 'get it'. An interesting 'apology' by Schwartz, Sun's CEO, coupled with the usual marketing-babble. I hope he means it.

Karen Spärck Jones

One of the few female computer science pioneers, Karen Spärck Jones died in early April 2007, just a few short years after her husband, Roger Needham, passed away in early 2003. Read the CL obituary as well as this month's IEEE Spectrum's article on her life and work titled "A woman's work".

Although JavaFX has a lot of potential, the technology also has a lot of weaknesses.

Can JavaFX become relevant? Ars provides a short summary of what's good and what's not so good about Sun's latest RI/desktop app platform. As this is probably the only Open Source effort tackling this increasingly important market segment, I'm very much wishing to see it succeed. Sadly, Sun's record with Swing is disappointing and JavaFX seems to be suffering from some of the same mistakes.

Πριν από μερικούς μήνες ο εκλεγμένος (πλέον) πρόεδρος της Γαλλίας, Νικολά Σαρκοζύ, πρότεινε έναν νόμο με τον οποίο -- εν ολίγοις -- απαγόρευε σε μη-επαγγελματίες δημοσιογράφους τη κινηματογράφηση και μετέπειτα δημοσίευση σκηνών βίας. Μπορεί στην εν λόγω απαγόρευση να υπήρχε σαφής διάκριση μεταξύ των προσδοκιών του Σαρκοζύ (δεδομένης της προεκλογικής περιόδου), της αιτιολόγησης της ύπαρξής της και του πρακτικού αντίκτυπου που είχε στην ελευθερία της έκφρασης, όμως τέτοιου είδους ρυθμίσεις δεν περιορίζονται στην Γαλλία. Στην Ελλάδα, πέραν της υπόθεσης Τσιπρόπουλου, έχουν περιπέσει στην αντίληψή μου κι'αλλες υποθέσεις (αυτο-)λογοκρισίας λόγω φόβου νομικών ή οικονομικών κυρώσεων από εταιρίες ή άτομα των οποίων τα συμφέροντα πιθανόν να θίγονται από δημοσιεύσεις. Κυρώσεις που -- στη μεγάλη τους πλειοψηφία -- είναι δυνατές μόνον επειδή οι συγγραφείς των εν λόγω κειμένων δεν είναι επαγγελματίες δημοσιογράφοι, αλλά απλοί πολίτες. Η νομοθεσία και στη χώρα μας, όπως και σε πολλές άλλες, προστατεύει τους επαγγελματίες δημοσιογράφους όπως και τις πηγές τους σε αντίθεση με τους 'απλούς' πολίτες. Ο διαχωρισμός μεταξύ δημοσιογράφων και 'πολιτών' μου φαίνεται βλακώδης και ανούσιος στις ημέρες μας: τα blogs μπορεί να εδράζονται σε ένα τεχνικό υπόβαθρο, αλλά αποτελούν πρωτίστως κοινωνική επανάσταση που επιτρέπει -- μεταξύ των σκουπιδιών -- την εμφάνιση και διάθεση ιδιαίτερα υψηλού επιπέδου δημοσιεύσεων από ειδήμωνες (σε κάθε τομέα), ευφυείς συγγραφείς σε επίπεδο που οι επαγγελματίες δημοσιογράφοι πολύ σπάνια προσεγγίζουν. Ο Rick Boucher, Δημοκρατικός βουλευτής των Η.Π.Α., φαίνεται να συμφωνεί με την άποψη αυτή και προτείνει ανανέωση της νομοθεσίας στη χώρα του ώστε bloggers και 'πολίτες δημοσιογράφοι' να απολαμβάνουν την ίδια προστασία με τους επαγγελματίες συμπολίτες τους. Και στα δικά μας.

Coda

First of all let me state here that I'm a huge fan of Panic. Their software is typically well-designed and extremely functional. Transmit 2.0 was the first shareware application I ever bought for OS X and I've kept an eye on them ever since. Yesterday Panic released Coda, an application that unites Web Development under one window. While I'd have a hard time abandoning TextMate --- it must be my UNIX roots :) --- I cannot but praise their work. John Gruber has a pretty good review of the app at Daring Fireball.
