France Versus the World

This is an excellent, very interesting audio documentary in podcast form by the BBC on France's view of the world, its current contributions, its outlook of the future. For all Francophiles, but also those concerned about France's role in Europe/EU, the World, culture and foreign policy in general this is a documentary worth listening to. It's in four parts; three have been published to date. The series is part of the BBC's Documentary Archive podcast. [iTunes]

Αλήθεια γιατί εμπιστευόμαστε…

...(υπ-)ανθρώπους τόσο ανίκανους, ανήθικους, αλαζόνες, αδιάφορους --- όχι απλώς ως ιατρούς αλλά ως Δασκάλους ιατρών; Και να μην είχε ίχνος αλήθειας η μαρτυρία της Αμαλίας, η ιστορία της θυμίζει σε αρκετούς από εμάς πολλές άλλες όπου ιατροί στη χώρα μας όχι απλώς δε βοήθησαν τους ασθενείς τους αλλά επέδειξαν την απόλυτη αλαζονεία, αδιαφορία και άγνοια. Όπως επίσης μας θυμίζει πως δεν είναι όλοι έτσι, πως άλλοι συνάδελφοί τους αποτελούν παράδειγμα προς μίμηση και λαμπρές εξαιρέσεις (αλήθεια, γιατί εξαιρέσεις όταν θα έπρεπε να είναι ο κανόνας;). Της αξίζουν συγχαρητήρια λοιπόν, όχι μόνον γιατί είχε το θάρρος να διατηρήσει τη λογική της όταν οι 'ειδικοί' την θεωρούσαν τρελή, όχι μόνον επειδή δημοσιοποίησε επωνύμως την ιστορία της μετά από όσα πέρασε, αλλά επειδή ρίχνει φως σε ένα θέμα που θα έπρεπε να απασχολεί πολύ περισσότερο, τόσο τους συνανθρώπους μας όσο και τη Πολιτεία. How Microsoft lost control of VC-1

A two page article on The Register on how excitement over VC-1 waned and H.264 ended up ruling the current generation of video codecs. While I am not keen on trusting Microsoft with any additional power over computer technology and I am quite happy that H.264 seems to have won the battle, what's really interesting here is how patent law, as ludicrous as it is, can even backfire on the mightiest players of the industry.
